Who is considered an international applicant? ›

If you graduate from a high school outside of the U.S., then you are considered an international applicant. If you graduate from a high school located in the U.S., you are considered a domestic applicant.

To be considered a Domestic Student, you must:

Be a citizen of the United States of America, or. Be a Permanent Resident of the United States of America at the time you apply for admission, or hold Refugee, Asylee, or Jay Treaty status.

International applicants are citizens or permanent residents of a country to which they intend to return other than the United States. International applicants may be in the United States on an educational, worker or visitor visa, or be residing in their home country.

Considered International Student or not? For most colleges in the US, you are NOT considered an international applicant if you have American citizenship, regardless of whether or not you are attending a high school in the US.

Consideration means substantively evaluating a job seeker's qualifications, skills, experience, education, etc. If a job seeker possesses the basic qualifications, and you consider them, the job seeker becomes an applicant unless they remove themselves from consideration.

For those that live in the US, domestic travel would be considered traveling anywhere within the 50 states, including US territories (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, etc.). International travel is when you leave the US border and enter a new country, like leaving the US and going to London or Nigeria.

In general: F and J student visa holders are considered resident aliens after five calendar years in the U.S. J researchers and professors are considered resident aliens after two calendar years in the U.S. H-1, TN, and O-1 visa holders are considered resident aliens once they meet the “substantial presence” test.

At USC, an international student is defined as an individual who will enter or has already entered the United States with an F1 visa. Students who are already in the U.S., or who plan to enter the U.S., on non-immigrant visas such as the E2, H2 or L2 are also considered international students.
