Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit het hiernamaals door Qiu Yu, een 'clown' uit de Sichuan-opera die gebaseerd is op de beroemde grootvader van de filmmaker zelf.
De visueel verbluffende nieuwe film van de Chinese regisseur en beeldend kunstenaar Qiu Jiongjiong is een epos over een theatergezelschap en hun avonturen in de kunst, de liefde en het leven, te midden van de tumultueuze gebeurtenissen in het China van de twintigste eeuw.
